If you need a quick refresher on some key plastic waste facts- here's some of it. We, humans, produce around 460 million metric tons of plastic products every year. And, about 50% of it is meant for single-use only. We generate 400 million tonnes of plastic waste each year, with about 46% of plastic waste ending up in landfills and a staggering 8 million tons of plastic trash ending up in our oceans every year.

So, if you ask about the environmental impact of plastic, we'd say it's quite intense that any of us could have ever thought. When it comes to plastic pollution and its effects on our planet, it is vital to look for proper alternatives. While it's true that plastics are used in every part of life, we can start by reducing our reliance on single-use plastics.

All plastic products have a poor environmental impact; however, when it comes to everyday plastic waste, single-use trash is at the top.

While all kinds of plastic pollution are bad for the planet, single-use plastic pollution is more troublesome. The main problem with single-use plastics is that they are meant to be used just once. After that, they often make their way to landfills or our oceans.

Single-use plastic products, like plastic disposable knife, fork, spoon, plates and cups, are made from non-renewable resources like petroleum. Meaning, they take a long time to break down in our ecosystem. So, while they stick around in our ecosystem waiting to decompose for about 500 years or even more, they stick around in our ecosystem as waste. This waste often sticks around in the landfills or oceans, where the marine life mistakes these floating trash pieces as food. Eventually, single-use plastic pollution leads to choking, entanglement, and even death of over a million sea creatures every year.

But, there's more. When it's finally time for these plastic pollution pieces to break down, they still don't go away. These plastic pieces further break down into microplastics that always enter our food chain. In short, we end up eating the plastic trash we dispose of.
